Privacy Settings

People are always wondering how their page got hacked or how their numbers are being obtained by random people. Well the answer is simple. So many people do not know how to change their privacy settings.

One of the many important privacy settings that some users do not know much about is with their contact information. Many users are unaware of their numbers, screen names, emails, and home addresses being displayed on their Facebook page. This is very dangerous because it allows strangers to access a users private information. Random people are contacting users and they will never guess that Facebook is how they obtained that information. To change this setting is very simple, but many forget to do it. By simply editing your contact information located in your "info" section can provide Facebook users with more safety.

Another thing many users have a limited knowledge on is their news feed. An average person thinks that their news feed can only show all of their friends on Facebook, and all of their friends have access to what you write no matter what. This is not true. There is a "friends list" feature that you can make different groups based on your preferences. After applying several people to one group, you can either change your settings so that only those members can see what you wrote, or, vise versa, you can change your settings so that you only see the news feeds of those people you added to the group.

There are also many users that have an issue with tagging. Some people may sign off Facebook for a few hours and come back to see themselves tagged in disturbing photos and videos. They don't want their family members (the ones who are their friends on Facebook) to see these images of course, but they had no idea this was being posted. For example, Ashley may have gone out one night and got "chocolate wasted." Some of her friends decided that it would be funny to take pictures of her dancing on top of tables, and then throwing up. After they left the party, Ashley of course goes to sleep, but her friends decide to put these pictures on Facebook immediately. Ashley has no idea about this until she wakes up hours later to see phone calls and messages from family members who are appalled by her behavior. The quickest solution to not allow your Facebook friends to see this, is to change your tagged settings. You have the ability to block your tagged items from anyone and everyone. This comes in handy because, although you can't remove someone else's pictures, you can hide them from appearing on your page. This feature also works with photo albums. You can easily customize who does/doesn't see certain albums.

WOOPSHHHHHH!!!

I kinda didn't keep track of blog assignments! I was looking at the archived schedule and it said we had a blog post due March 24... well I didnt do it then, so I am going to do it now. :)
(MC please forgive me for my stupid mistake and forgetfulness)

A person who opposed my argument, Facebook really is an addiction, is psychiatrist Vaughan Bell. She says that “Internet addiction researchers conceive of the Internet as if it were a set of activities when, in fact, it’s a medium for communication.” She believes addiction can only occur in substances and activities, not mediums. She puts Internet addiction in the same category as “reading books, going for walks, chatting to friends and any other enjoyable activity.” These activities may be compulsive but does not make them an addiction. Psychologists have gone into more research about Internet and Facebook addiction and came to the conclusion that a person can really become addicted to the Internet, in my case, Facebook. They titled it the Facebook Addiction disorder. The basic summary of an addiction is one's desire and crave for a substance or behavior. If a person is constantly having the urge to be on Facebook, then it is considered an addiction.

Facebook on Society

I know I already wrote a little bit about this topic when I was brainstorming for my first paper, but there is more I want to say. Facebook has a lot of positive and negative effects on our society.

Pro’s:
-Facebook is a new form of communication
-Connect family and friends
-Helps anti-social people communicate
-Some people express themselves better when writing
-Other businesses add features
-Other businesses are advertised
-You can meet new people
-You can keep up to date with friends
-You can play games
-There are always new applications

Con’s
-Lower social skills
-Allows strangers creep on your page
-You can misunderstand what a person is trying to say (writing style)
-There is a lot of gossip and drama spreading
-It’s a huge distraction
-Intrusive on personal property
-Friends are not always friends
-There are useless advertisements
-Easy to lie and deceive (fake pages, lying is easier when it has to be written)
-Dangerous (sexual harassment, stalkers)
-Youth encouragement (Facebook is open to all ages, little kids may see older people doing things and they start to think it is ok to do the same at their age)

Just some random things to think about.

Facebook's Purpose

What is the purpose of Facebook?

The original purpose of Facebook was to connect users with classmates. Zuckerberg only let college students from Harvard sign up. They stayed in contact with each other, mostly for school related things. In time, Zuckerberg allowed all people to sign up and connect. Facebook spread throughout many countries. When that happened, the new purpose was to connect users from all around the world. It joined many lost family members and friends.

Today, Facebook has so many new applications and games. Instead of going on to socialize, people go on to be entertained. There are over 900 million activities, including groups, games and applications, on Facebook. This causes Facebook to be used way too often. People are beginning to use Facebook for numerous hours a day. This is very unhealthy because not only does it decrease a person's communication skills by talking to people they can talk to person everyday, but it causes users to become addicted and stay on for hours.

Facebook should only be used for communicating. If a person wants to play games and mess with applications they can easily sign on to a different website. -->> In my opinion at least

Is good food too much to ask for?

I really wish our cafeteria had better food. I feel like they are trying to starve me to death! I know I am a picky eater and all, but a little more options would be nice. The only good food they have is unhealthy and greasy. I feel like they don't even try. Some of the foods they mess up on are very hard to not make correct.
One day I was sitting in the cafe for lunch during admitted students day. I overheard one of the leaders telling the high school students that the food is always delicious. I was so shocked! They purposely make the food perfect when other students are here but once they leave its back to he same ol stuff.
I also feel like we should have a quick food place open 24 hours for those students who do not have cars. There are so many nights that I get hungry and don't feel like moving my car from the deck.

IT SUCKS!!!

NEW NEW NEW NEW &+ NEW!!!

Mark Zuckerberg is always updating Facebook. He is very smart in doing this because people are obsessed with the new. Zuckerberg know's how to keep previous users attached and pull in new users.

Statuses:
Within the last couple years the status box has changed from “Username is…” to “What’s on your mind?” Zuckerberg realized that people kind of drifted away from continuing the sentence using "Username is..." People had too much on their mind that they wanted to talk about. When he realized that change was working effectively, he added the tag feature, where you can tag other friends profile link in your status, and he made it possible to add pictures, videos and links, making the communication better.

Comments:
When Facebook was first created, a user couldn't post more than 500 characters. Mark Zuckerberg realized that comments started to have more meaning behind what users tried to squeeze in the box. Users who had long and thorough thoughts, had to post several separate comments. He solved this problem by taking away the amount of characters you can write. There was also times where users wrote short and blunt messages. They felt too lazy to write sentences or complete thoughts on simple statuses. He solved this by adding the button “like” feature, which allowed you to like a picture, status, or comment.
He also added the new enter button feature. Instead of clicking the "post" comment button, you can now press enter on your keyboard when you are done typing. Zuckerberg also decreased the amount of time one would waste waiting to see new comments. Instead of constantly refreshing notifications, comments automatically pop up within seconds.

Applications:
Then, people started to post less comments and statuses, and spend less time on Facebook. Zuckerberg then made it possible for other businesses to add applications and games. Now there are millions of things to do on Facebook. This not only helps Facebook expand and constantly be used, but it helps businesses expand and make more money.

The creation of new applications, games and other features causes Facebook to never get old.
Just how Parker from The Facebook Effect said, we go into a “trance” and “just keep clicking and clicking and clicking form profile to profile, viewing the data.” All the new features and updates make it possible for users to do more things within the hours they spend on Facebook.

Dislike button

Don't you wish there was a dislike button? People post so many stupid and pointless things on Facebook. Since we can't remove the comments for them, I feel that we should at least have the right to dislike it. It doesnt even have to be for serious reasons all the time. It could be stuff like "Rainy day in Charlotte" and people can click the dislike button. Although I feel some people may get upset that people are disliking their pictures and comments, its only Facebook. Getting mad over Facebook is just stupid. If a person writes negative things then they should expect to get disliked. If you are afraid of having something disliked just monitor what you post. If you can express how you feel, then why can't we.

DISLIKEEEEEE!!!!!

Answering my Essay

I believe that my argumentative essay was very interesting. The question was: Is Facebook really an addiction? According to dictionary.com, the definition for addiction is “being abnormally tolerant to and dependent on something that is psychologically or physically habit forming.” Psychologists have done studies proving that Facebook is an actual disorder. People are on Facebook all the time. They just can’t seem to look away from the computer for more than 10 minutes.
Facebook addicts always find something to do on Facebook no matter how many obligations they have. They may start to loose sleep because they feel like they are going to be missing out on something important. Like all addictions this one can be cured within time. There are actually counselors to help cure this disorder.
Do you think you have the Facebook Addiction Disorder?

NATIONAL CHAMPS

I know I'm writing this kind of late but we go to an AMAZING school. Our basketball team kicked serious ASS this year and so did the cheerleaders. We went to a competition over spring break at Myrtle Beach. It was so much fun and the best part is... we won :).
For those of you who dont know cheerleading, its broken up kind of the same as basketball. Instead of being D1, D2, or D3 cheer is broken into different levels. For all-star teams there are levels 1-5 depending on age and skill, 5 being the oldest and the best. When it comes to school teams you are separated by your size and gender. There is high school small, medium, and large division and if there are any guys on the team it is small co-ed, medium co-ed, and large co-ed. The same is for college.
The Queens Cheerleading team took the National Champs title for Collegiate small division. We received a nice trophy, a banner, and 2 personal medals. It was amazing.

G O O D B Y E F A C E B O O K

I am starting to believe Facebook is a fad. I use to be on Facebook ALL the time and now I'm barely on. I just get tired of reading everyone's business and having the same people talk to me. Part of this reason is because I really do have a stalker constantly hitting me up but still Facebook is getting old.

I actually know a lot a people who are not using Facebook as much as they use too. They claim its kind of boring and the same stuff is going on.

I know one of my classmates thats doing the topic Facebook as a fad and I think it would make a great paper.

New topic

So I decided to change my topic. I felt that mine was too broad and I could write a thousand pages on it... and i wont. I think now I am going to talk about the addiction people have to FB. Is it really an addiction? What is an addiction ? Is it like a cigarette or a drug? Can people stop using it? There are so many questions we can ask ourselves on this topic and i think it would make a great paper. :)

Argumentative Assignment

Soooo ... I think I am going to write about whether or not Facebook has a positive or negative impact on society. I didnt elaborate too much because that's what my essay is for, but here are the basics.

Article: http://www.suite101.com/content/facebook-good-or-bad-for-communication-a121387

My article is separated into three different parts. The positive impact of Facebook, the negative impact, and how Facebook should actually be used. Some key points about the positive impact on Facebook is that it joins many family members and friends from long distances. It also helps those people who feel isolated and are anti-social. Facebook also introduces people to new faces that they would have never met before.

Facebook also plays a negative role in society. The most common thought about why Facebook can be negative is because it prevents and lowers the drive for people to interact face to face. Instead of actually going up to the person to have a conversation they may go to the internet and send them a comment or a message. This leads to misunderstandings. Without seeing a persons body language and hearing their tone it is very hard to know how they are saying a statement. Lastly, Facebook is a "easier" way to gossip. Most people are too scared to say things to the person face to face so they start problems on Facebook.

The last section talks about how Facebook should be used. It states that it is necessary for some kind of social and communication skills. It should only be used for positive reasons such as, getting to know new people and starting new relationships. With that being said, you should communicate with the people you know mostly face to face and use Facebook for new people.

I find this so interesting because there are so many pro's and con's to having a social network such as Facebook. I think social networks can be good to society you just have to know how to balance yourself as well as your time.

Facebook Ad's

I never really looked at the ads on my facebook because they never interested me but now that I look at it I find it kind of creepy. One ad that really caught my eye was "Obtain your Visa Card Today." I feel like Facebook is stalking me cause I always access my bank account and gift card accounts online. I also do a lot of online shopping so I think they are trying to get me to spend more money! It didn't work, but I think its a great way to try.

Another ad I saw was one about the great Walmart. I just recently ordered me a new pair of glasses so I can see why this one popped up as well. All the ad says is "Like Walmart and lets save together." If I havent been to Walmarts website about 20 times already, then I would have viewed the site to see what they had to offer.

Lastly, I seen the ad for "Make your home BEAUTIFUL." This is obviously for decorating new homes. I am not looking to get a house, but I have looked at apartments in Charlotte, NC.

Facebook ad's may or may not be effective. I think it's quite interesting to see ad's according to your interests on your homepage. It is a great way for small companies to expand and get well known.

6. Spam- hackers just need a life!!!!
7. Picture shrinks- if you have to squint your eyes, tilt your head, and move really close to the screen to see the picture, it should NOT be there.
8. Relationship gossip- lets not even go there! People and there facebook officialness ! Like really? Are you that insecure about your relationship that you need it to be talked about on facbebook.
9. Farmville, fishville, catville, creepville... facebook is enough of a distraction why add games?

Visual Rhetoric Assignment

This cartoon was drawn by cartoonist Gary Varvel. It's purpose is to introduce the audience, the people, to the governments stingy ways. The big boat represents the government. The boat has different boxes on it such as Chrysler, health care, banks and wall street, which represent the governments power to obtain anything they want. Attached to the boat are the people of our country and they are chained up to show how little freedom we have. One guy has a float around him that says future, which is basically saying that in the future the government is going to be able to control us completely. The other guy has a float that says taxpayers and this shows that the government is going to continue to take all the money from citizens and collect it for themselves. The intended audience is the people of our country and the purpose is to persuade us that the government is taking over!
